Careers and Certification in the Automotive Industry

Careers in the Automotive Industry.

Don't Overlook Automotive Technology as a High-Tech Career Path.

Some of the high-tech systems on automobiles today that were unheard of 30 years ago are stability and traction control systems, adaptive cruise control, and variable valve timing. Young people should have skills in math, science, communications and technical skills to have a career as an automotive technician. Some advantages in obtaining an education as an automotive technicians versus other high-tech educational options are automotive technology careers can begin after just two years of education causing less college debt.  The automotive technician field is  expected to add 237,500 new jobs with a growth rate of 30 percent up to 2020. While more and more jobs are getting moved overseas like accounting services, customer call-center work, and computer programming, automotive technicians are fairly 'immune' to this. Some other positions that an automotive technician can do in the automotive industry are line technician, service consultant, service director, and store owner. The automotive technician job is sometimes known as the 'portal career' as so many people have started their careers in the automotive aftermarket as an auto technician.

A Career as an Automotive Technician.

Personally, I don't think I would enjoy any aspects of being an automotive technician just because I do not have that type of personality that could I enjoy working with the public, computers and cars. A couple things that I found interesting in this video is how automotive technicians now work more with computers then with cars, as well as how hands on the job is. I think life-long learning is important and necessary in the automotive industry because as seen from the video, the automotive technician job requires a lot of experience working with different types of cars and car parts and new computer systems, and you can't learn that before you start the job. Some characteristics and skills someone should possess when considering a career as an automotive technician are a basic knowledge and skill in computers, engineering, math, English, and communication.

Jobs in the Automotive Industry.

After reading about the "best 10 jobs in the automotive universe," I think the job I would enjoy the most is the Classic Car Restorer.  Not only do I enjoy old classic cars and being able to restore things back to their original state, but I believe I would also enjoy being my own boss, making my own schedule and being self employed. The job I think I would enjoy the least would be the Supercar engine builder. I have promised myself that I would never go into any type of factory work or that type of labor, and not only is an engine builder that type of job, but a supercar engine maker is also slow paced which is not something I would enjoy.
